Uzbekistan-EU subcommittee on justice, home affairs and human rights meets in Tashkent
The Fourth Meeting of the Subcommittee “Republic of Uzbekistan-European Union” on Justice, Home Affairs, Human Rights and related issues was held in Tashkent on May 8-9, 2007.
The Delegation of Uzbekistan was led by Minister of Justice F.Otakhanov. The EU Delegation consisted of the senior experts from the German EU Presidency, European Commission and the EU Council.
During the meeting the Sides discussed the issues of combating terrorism, drug-trafficking and organized crime, border management, development of customs system and judiciary, as well as current situation and perspectives of bilateral cooperation in the mentioned areas.
In accordance with earlier reached agreements, the regular Human Rights Dialogue between Uzbekistan and EU was launched in the framework of the Subcommittee which includes a broad range of issues on the situation in the sphere of democratic development, human rights and freedoms, strengthening of civil society in Uzbekistan and the EU Member States. The Dialogue is based on the principles of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs.
On the outcomes of the Meeting, which was held in a constructive atmosphere and in the spirit of mutual understanding, the Sides expressed common satisfaction on the dialogue they have had.
