Canvassing of Presidential Candidates Has Started

Canvassing of presidential candidates - an important stage in the election campaign in Uzbekistan has started.

There are 4 candidates running for presidency: Asliddin Rustamov - from Peoples Democratic Party of Uzbekistan; Dilorom Tashmuhamedova - from Adolat Social-Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, Akmal Saidov - from the voters' initiative group; Islam Karimov - from the Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businessmen - Liberal-Democratic Party of Uzbekistan.
According to the Law "On the Election of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan" all presidential candidates are given equal rights to use mass media in accordance with procedure specified by the Central Election Committee of Uzbekistan.

Canvassing depends on the legal base, historic development and other peculiarities of each country and it varies from country to country. For example, like in Uzbekistan, in a number of countries as Lithuania, Moldova, Armenia canvassing starts from the day of registration of presidential candidates. Canvassing on the Election Day is banned in many countries.
It is banned to publish the results of the Gallup Poll, election results' forecasts and other results of researches connected with the elections less than 5 days before the election day in Uzbekistan.

One of the specific characters of the Uzbek electoral legislation is that all expenses for canvassing are financed from the budget.

In many foreign countries in particular US, Poland it is not foreseen to assign means from the budget for canvassing. In Greece, Israel and Switzerland the use of mass media depends on the quantity of seats occupied by political parties in parliament. Small parties are provided with lesser air time.

During canvassing nation-wide newspapers Halq so'zi , Narodnoye Slovo, and Pravda Vostoka publish biographies and election programs of the candidates running for president. Their biographies have already been published.

As is known well each political party which has nominated its candidate to the post of the President has a periodical and these candidates conduct their canvassing through these newspapers. But the voters' initiative group will use the Jamiyat newspaper founded by NGOs for this purpose.

It needs to be mentioned that presidential elections in Uzbekistan will be held on December 23, 2007 and for contenders will run for presidency. 2 political parties Milliy Tiklanish and Fidokorlar could not collect the required amount of signatures of voters.
