Experts State Qualitative Growth of Political Parties and Electorate of Uzbekistan

Uzbek political scientists state that on the eve of the presidential elections to be held on December 23, 2007 the activity and qualitative growth of political parties and electorate in Uzbekistan have increased.

Uzbek political scientist Sayfiddin Juraev said that if earlier political parties and the electorate were less active in both parliamentary and presidential elections because of the transitional period and at present they have improved. Today they have their own political programs and nominate their candidates to the post of the President.

According to Mr. Shuhrat Fayziev, in previous presidential elections voters were proposed one or two candidates while in the forthcoming elections at least 5 or 6 candidates have been nominated. Therefore, voters will be able not only to go to vote to polling stations but also to elect."

The Deputy of the Legislative Chamber of the Uzbek Parliament, Mrs. Shoira Umarova, said that for the first time in the history of this country a lady has been nominated in the forthcoming elections as a candidate to the post of the President. This testifies that women have begun to take an active part in the political life of the society.

She mentioned that the Adolat Social-Democratic Party of Uzbekistan has nominated the First Deputy Chairperson of the Central Council of this party, Mrs. Dilorom Tashmuhamedova, as a candidate to the post of the President.
