Central Election Committee of Uzbekistan has announced number of voters and electoral districts

In a session of the Central Election Committee of Uzbekistan held on October 5, 2007 a decree on forming electoral districts on holding presidential elections in Uzbekistan was adopted.

According to this Decree, 14 electoral districts will be formed within the boundaries of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, provinces and the city of Tashkent. This document indicates the number of voters in each electoral district. Thus Tashkent city is the largest electoral district because there are more than 1.5 million voters. The number of voters on the entire territory of Uzbekistan is about 16.3 million.

The announcement of the delimitation of the electoral districts and the number of voters will help political parties and voters' initiative groups in collecting voters' signatures supporting a nominated presidential candidate.

As is well known, according to the Law on the Election of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan political parties and voters' initiative groups have to collect at least 5 percent of signatures of the total number of all voters in support of their nominated candidate. They must finish nominating candidates 45 days before the actual elections to be held on December 23, 2007.
